Japan Creative Centre, Singapore
31st August 2018 to 15th September 2018

On 31st August 2018, the opening ceremony of The Beauty and Diversity of Japanese Washi Paper ~ Traditional Paper Dolls and Contemporary Washi Products, was officially addressed by Japan Creative Centre’s (JCC) Director, Ms Akiko Sugita, and thus, I held my very first exhibition in Singapore.

It was a collaboration between two artists, Mrs Masako Soeda, a Japanese Paper Doll artist, and myself, with Mino Washi, inscribed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Showcasing both the tradition and innovation of washi, the exhibition features a wide range of Japanese paper dolls telling stories of traditional Japanese folktales, kirie Peranakan batik designs with yuzen washi prints, heavily influenced by the Peranakan style, miniature origami accessories, miniature origami, as well as innovative products such as tote bags and table lampshades made by Mino washi.

During this period, His Excellency Ambassador Kenji Shinoda and his wife, Mdm Yuko Shinoda visited the exhibition that showed a collaboration between three countries, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. In that course of time, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Minister Masagos Zulkifli and his wife, Mdm Jumelah Jaafar, visited the exhibition and it was indeed a pleasure to learn and share the knowledge of Peranakan culture, heritage, and traditions, which are closely tied to the Malays. We were also blessed to be graced with Dr Iskandar Jalil and his wife, Mdm Saleha visit.
